Songs, artists and even food: How does Russia steal Ukrainian culture

російська культура

Everyone knows that Russia has been spreading its roots of propaganda on society not for the last 8 years, but for decades. The Russian Federation openly lies in the political and information fields, tells nonsense about "successes" on the battlefield and launches a hostile information and psychological operation against Ukrainians. However,  in Russians' opinion, this is not enough. That's why Russia also steals and passes Ukrainian songs, artists, etc. off as its own.

"Tribune" tells about Russian fakes spread in order to steal the creative heritage of Ukraine.

Last year Russia brazenly called Taras Shevchenko a "Ukrainian-Russian poet", explaining this by the fact that the poet has works in Russian, which means he is a Russian poet.

For some reason, the Russian Federation forgot about one important point - at that time, the Russian Empire forbade writing in the Ukrainian language, a bunch of bans and circulars were introduced to eradicate the Ukrainian language, so it is very convenient to use the narrative "He wrote in Russian, so He is a Russian".

This  year Russia has outdone itself: a plaque " Russian poet" was affixed to Taras Shevchenko monument in occupied Luhansk.

"O brown-eyed maidens, fall in love, but not with Muscovites.” - these and other obvious taunts and disgust of the poet towards Russians for some reason did not lead them to the truth.

Painters

Art is another thing that Russia literally stole from us, because the occupying country not only included Arkhyp Kuindzhi and Ivan Aivazovskyi to the list of its elite, but also stole their works from the museums of Mariupol, which the occupiers destroyed.

Indeed, Ivan Aivazovskyi was born in Crimea, before that his family lived in Galicia, emigrating there from Armenia. The marinist's work is mostly dedicated to Ukraine: "Wedding in Ukraine", "Ukrainian landscape with chumkas under the moon", "Reed on the Dnipro River", "Mill on the bank of the river. Ukraine", "During the harvest".

Arkhyp Kuindzhi. He was born in Mariupol. The artist considered "Moonlit night on the Dnipro River" to be the main picture of his work. There were also many other works based on Ukrainian motifs: "Ukrainian Night", "The Milky Way in Mariupol", "The Dnipro River in the Morning", "Ukraine".

Kazymyr Malevych.  The artist was born in Kyiv,  he studied at the Kyiv Art School, later moved to Moscow. Dmytro Horbachev, a researcher of Malevich's work, said that the artist basically wrote "Ukrainian" in the "nationality" column filling out questionnaires.

Songs

The Center for Countering Disinformation have made a list of classical Ukrainian musical works that Russian "poets" and "musicians" have stolen and released as exclusively Russian art. You might know them:

  • "Arise, arise, my people" - "Arise, great country."
  • "The asters are white in the autumn garden" - "Someone came down from the hill."
  • "Eh, yabluchko" - "Eh, yabloko!".
  • "Oh frost, frost, don't freeze me" - "Oh frost, frost, don't freeze me."
  • "You hear my friend, glorious young man" - "We will bravely go into battle for the power of the Soviets."

Modern songs

Russia  also shamelessly stole modern Ukrainian songs. The Russians mostly flaunted their stolen and modified compositions on TikTok.

For example, here is a "cover" by the Russians of Okean Elza's song - "Not Your War", which is dedicated to the war and events in Ukraine:

And this is already a "masterpiece" to the song of the Go_A group, which won the Eurovision Song Contest:

The Russians are trying to pass Kuzma Scriabin's songs  off as their own. In particular, the track "Mom", "People like ships", but the song "Spy sobі sama" became the most viral among them.

Even borscht!

Russian sources  very often note that borscht is a common Slavic dish.

This year the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage has added Ukrainian borscht to the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage in need of immediate protection.

In 2020, the famous Ukrainian chef Yevhen Klopotenko made an expedition through the regions of Ukraine in search of original borscht recipes.

In fact, the given examples are only a small part of what Russia brazenly stole from Ukrainian achievements.

Russia continues to do the same, stubbornly appropriating and remaking in its own style songs that Ukrainian artists created literally yesterday. In the age of globalization and the Internet, it is really stupid to do this, because it is so easy to identify the author.
